Ways Homeowners Can Support Contractor Safety on the Job

Contractor Safety Responsibilities: What Homeowners Need to Know

When you hire an independent contractor or subcontractor for your renovation, it’s essential to understand that, as the property owner, you can still be held responsible for safety on your job site. Even if the contractor manages daily work, accidents or injuries that occur due to unsafe conditions could lead to unexpected costs, and you may end up having to pay if the contractor lacks proper insurance or coverage.

That’s why having a clear contract is crucial. It should outline who is responsible for safety measures, insurance coverage, and how risks are managed. Verifying that your contractor carries their insurance—including workers’ compensation and liability—is essential to protect yourself from financial harm if an accident happens during the project. Taking these steps helps ensure your renovation runs smoothly without costly surprises.

Homeowners Share in Safety—But Deskins Handles the Details

When a homeowner hires a general contractor like Deskins, they get a partner who takes safety seriously. We oversee all subcontractors, verify that every crew member is appropriately licensed, and ensure that all workers are trained to handle electrical hazards, operate heavy machinery, and safely manage potentially hazardous materials.

However, it’s essential to note that homeowners can be held liable if unsafe conditions on their property result in injury or damage. That’s why understanding your homeowner safety responsibilities for contractors is not only helpful—it’s crucial to protect your investment and your peace of mind.
