Key Features to Align with Your Home

Creating a seamless transition between your home and any new structure requires careful attention to key architectural details. Matching these features ensures your new addition blends naturally into your property rather than standing out awkwardly.

Deskins helps homeowners identify and perfect these important elements, providing a flawless outbuilding project.

Focus on these essential design elements:

  • Existing home structure: Match the new outbuilding’s basic form and layout to your home’s original structure.
  • Home’s exterior details: Pay close attention to trim, siding, and other defining features.
  • Roofing materials: Use the same or complementary shingles or roofing products.
  • Window styles: Choose windows that mimic your existing windows’ shapes, grids, and proportions.
  • Materials: Ensure siding, wood, stone, or brick match or complement what is used on the main house.
  • Paint colors: Select colors that coordinate, avoiding shades that clash or make the outbuilding a sore thumb.
  • Doors: Match door styles and colors for a cohesive appearance.
  • Roof line: Align the pitch and design of your new roof with your home’s roof for greater visual harmony.
  • Landscaping elements: To tie the new structure into the overall landscape, integrate shrubs, flower beds, or hardscaping around it.

Every choice you make impacts how “at home” your new building looks on your property. With Deskins’ expert guidance, these selections will enhance your home’s charm and boost your property value.

Types of Outbuildings to Consider

Planning Your New Outbuilding for
Visual Harmony

The planning phase is crucial for achieving a cohesive design. Your new outbuilding should echo your home’s exterior and architectural style to create a cohesive look across the property. Paying attention to the roof line helps maintain continuity between structures.

Moreover, placement is key. Evaluate the location of your new structure carefully, considering the surroundings and overall space available on your lot. The goal is to create an outbuilding that serves its function, complements the landscape, and enhances the beauty of your property.

Choose quality materials that match or complement your existing buildings, and be consistent with doors, window styles, and paint colors. This attention to detail will help your outbuilding achieve visual harmony and boost your home’s curb appeal. Deskins ensures every phase of your project supports a unified and attractive property.

Rules, Value, and Final Touches

Before you break ground, check with your architectural review board to ensure compliance with community standards and HOA requirements. Each area has regulations about what can be built, how large the structure can be, and how many outbuildings are allowed on a property.

A carefully planned outbuilding project can significantly increase your property’s and resale value. Consider what types of outbuildings best meet your current and future needs, whether a garden shed, storage shed, or detached garage. Choosing durable materials, coordinating paint colors, and investing in quality roofing materials ensures the new structure will endure and enhance your property long-term.

By aligning your new building with your existing home structure, focusing on architectural style, and choosing appropriate landscaping elements, you can create an attractive, functional addition that adds real value and convenience. Deskins offers guidance through every stage to maximize your investment.

FAQs About Matching Outbuildings

Should outbuildings match a house?

Outbuildings should match the main house in terms of materials, paint colors, and overall architectural style to create a unified and attractive property. A coordinated appearance promotes visual harmony and protects property value. Deskins ensures that your new structure complements your home’s distinctive character.

How many outbuildings can I have on my property?

The number of outbuildings you can have often depends on HOA requirements and local zoning laws. To avoid any restrictions, always consult your architectural review board before planning your outbuilding project. Deskins helps you navigate these requirements smoothly.

Do outbuildings increase property value?

A well-designed outbuilding that complements the existing home can significantly increase property value and improve your resale value. Outbuildings add functional space like storage, work areas, or even additional living space, making your property more attractive to buyers. Deskins designs structures that are both functional and valuable.

What is the largest outbuilding without planning permission?

The maximum size of an outbuilding without needing planning permission varies by location. However, structures like a storage shed, garden shed, or detached garage typically fall within acceptable limits when they meet specific height and placement guidelines. Always verify with your local building authority. Deskins can assist you in determining the best design for compliance.
